Kumi-Uchi Jiu-Jitsu
A Short History

Etymology
Jiu: Supple, Soft, Yielding
Jitsu (Jutsu): Art, Technique
The terms soft and yielding can be misleading. Jiu-Jitsuka (Jiu-Jitsu practitioners) try to use their opponents energy and momentum against that person, as opposed to directly resisting, which some arts do.

Kumi-Uchi Jiu-Jitsu originated during the time of the samurai. When samurai lost use of their weapons they would resort to Jiu-Jitsu. Because of the armor they wore, punches and kicks were impractical, and so they resorted to the use of throws, locks and breaks.
When samurai were no longer dominant, Jiu-Jitsu became more popular among the Japanese citizens. Because they did not wear armor, more strikes were incorporated into the art.
